So What Exactly is Prolink IntelliSense?

Let’s take our 100W 4-port GaN Charger for example.

The standard output distribution when you connect to a single port:

  • When connected to Port 1 only: Draws 100W max 
  • When connected to Port 2 only: Draws 100W max
  • When connected to Port 3 only: Draws 65W max
  • When connected to Port 4 only: Draws 30W max 

However, when you connect to two ports, the total output of 100W will be distributed between the 2 connected devices, and this is when IntelliSense comes into play by identifying the connected device(s) and adjusts the voltage output to optimized charging speed. 

Scenario with IntelliSense...

When connected to Port 1 and Port 2, Port 1 will automatically draw 65W while Port 2 will draw 35W, instead of 50W each. This means that if you were to connect (a) your laptop (60W charging speed) in Port 1, and (b) your smartphone (20W charging speed) in Port 2, you are still fully optimizing the charging output for both devices, without having to lose charging time.

...vs. Scenario without IntelliSense

Similarly when connected to Port 1 and Port 2, the total charging output of 100W will be evenly distributed, with both Ports 1 and 2 each taking 50W each. This means that only (a) 50W is available to charge your laptop (60W) - a 10W deficit in charging speed that results in a longer charging time, and (b) 50W is used to charge your smartphone (20W) - an unnecessary surplus/wasted charging output that does not speed up your charging time. 


To give you a better idea, most small devices like smartphones and tablets typically have power requirements between 5W to 20W, while larger devices like your laptops that charge via USB-C typically demands an average of 60W, with a handful that goes up to 100W. 


Other possible scenarios of the different power distribution with IntelliSense as illustrated below.


A common misconception is how fast your devices get charged is solely dependent on your charger’s total power/output. However, charging speeds also depend on how your respective devices draw current - meaning that they will only use as much power as they are designed to, regardless of the wattage of the USB charger.
